Congratulations to George Mooney, who has won the first West Suffolk Young Jazz Musician competition.
George played an excellent set including 'I Got Rhythm', 'Summertime' and 'K.C. Blues' on Alto Saxophone.
All of the finalists were accompanied by The Chris Ingham Trio, with performances from previous WSYM winner Harry Greene and special guest adjudicator Alan Barnes.
Well done to all of the finalists the standard of musicianship on display in the final was excellent and the final showed just how much musical talent can be found in the West Suffolk area.
The West Suffolk Young Musician Competition was run for over 20 years by the West Suffolk Schools’ Association and the list of former winners goes all the way back to 1985. The competition in its current form has been supported in recent years by members of the Suffolk Sinfonia – an orchestra based in Bury St. Edmunds.
The current committee took over the competition in 2005 and it has grown from strength to strength with the Finalists Concert now being held at The Apex every July. It caters for young musicians across West Suffolk from Grade 3 up to diploma standard. The competition gives a platform for young musicians to showcase their talents and to gain experience of performing as a soloist in a world class venue. Many previous winners and competitors have gone on to study music at university or conservatoires and some are now professional musicians.
